Tips for Summer Hearing Aid Care

Summer is finally here, which means more socializing, more time outdoors and more activities. But, whilst all of this is great for our well-being, it can be a challenge for our delicate hearing aids. At Audiology Associates of Greeley, we understand how valuable your hearing aid is to your day to day life. We want you to be able to protect it from the elements this summer, without missing out on any of the fun. This blog is full of tips to help you do just that.

Top Tips for Summer Hearing Aid Care:

  • Although sunscreen is a must for your skin, it’s a big no-no for your hearing aids. It contains oils and chemicals that can damage your device, so be sure to place your hearing aid in storage box before you apply any.
  • To keep your hearing aid working at optimal performance, you need to protect it from anything that could get into the inner workings. This includes sweat, water, humidity and dust. Simply opt to wear either a sweatband or a product such as a hearing aid sheath. These are made of materials that will absorb and wick away moisture, which should give you enough peace of mind to take part in whatever activity arises.
  • If you are planning on participating in sports or anything where you will be moving around a lot, you might also consider a clip or lanyard as a fail-safe precaution. This will prevent your hearing aid from being lost or broken if it falls from your ear.
  • It is best to remove your hearing aid when near or in water. Many devices can cope with some splashes but excessive exposure to water is not advised. When showering, swimming or on board a boat, be sure to store your device whilst it’s not in use.
  • If your hearing aid does get wet, dry them thoroughly with a clean soft cloth. Remove the battery and place in a drying box.
  • Disinfect your device each day with some specially created wipes. Bacteria can thrive in damp and warm environments, these wipes will help you remove any bacteria present on the microphone or smaller working parts as well as any earwax or other residue.
  • During the day, if you are not using your hearing device, leave it somewhere cool and safe with the battery doors open to let moisture evaporate. (Do not leave your hearing aid out in the heat as it could become damaged.)
  • Finally, we recommend storing your hearing aid in a drying box or dehumidifier every night. There are a variety of products available at all ends of the pricing scale, from desiccant jars to all in one light boxes that clean, dry and store your device.
